Certified Compost Facility Operators
The Compost Council of Canada promotes environmentally responsible and compliant operations, and endeavors to raise the level of professionalism within our industry. Certification of facility operations staff achieves this goal by providing a structured means of increasing and verifying the level of knowledge. Operator certification programs are also used by various provincial governments as part of regulatory approvals and compliance programs.
National Compost Operator Certification Program
The Compost Council of Canada’s National Compost Operator Certification Program is targeted at the certification of facility Operators and Supervisors. Certification of non-operating personnel (e.g. equipment suppliers, consultants, ministry of environment enforcement staff) is not within the scope of the program at this time. However, non-operational personnel are encouraged to take advantage of the training aspects of the certification program as a means of improving their overall knowledge and experience.
Alberta’s Composting Facility Operator Certification Program
In 2010, Alberta Environment revised its Municipal Waste Management Facility Operator Certification Program in conjunction with the updates to Alberta Environment’s waste regulatory framework. The program has been renamed the “Alberta Landfill and Composting Facility Operator Certification Program”, and all facilities and operators in Alberta are required to meet the new program requirements by September 1, 2011. One of the changes implemented is that the certification program for Compost Facility Operators is now administered by The Compost Council of Canada on behalf of Alberta Environment. As a “certifying partner”, the Council’s role is to provide training programs, administer certification applications and exams, and issue certificates.
